It appears that Chatech (the IRC network we use) has fallen over like an especially big, fally-over dog, so we’ve relocated to QuakeNet.
No word yet on whether this is more than a temporary move, but for now, the COGS IRC channel is at: irc.quakenet.org #cogs
The IRC applet on this site will still get you there.
Hope to see everyone there!
I spent 5.5 hours at the LAN last Saturday making the finishing touches to our latest episode of “Meet the committee”. Many lols were had when the video was premiered in the evening, which I was very happy about. This time around I was the only person who had seen it before the premiere, so I had no idea what people would make of it!
If you didn’t see this video at the LAN watch it now! Even if you did see it watch it now! If any of you have YouTube accounts please rate/comment it appropriately to help spread what we’re doing around the net!
So one of the things the committee wanted to do this year is get a bit more organised at LANs. We don’t know whether it’ll work well - it didn’t happen as we wanted last time, for sure. Nonetheless here is our draft schedule for the LAN this weekend.
We’ve tried not to fill up the whole day, and we know games will be played outside of schedule (esp. DotA and the like) But we’d like to keep roughly to this so that, in particular, people who aren’t carball fans get a look-in.
The final section of the LAN before pack-up is still open. We might see what people are feeling like on the day, or we might not fill it at all.
Let’s see how it goes! If you’ve been stuck under a rock (or you’ve exceeded your bandwidth limit and have been kicked off the internet until now) The LAN starts at 9AM, this Saturday the 1st of November, in MR5D on the fifth floor of the Union. See you there!
At our first LAN of the university year last Saturday, we premiered our long-kept secret which we had in store for you. Our very own parody of the Team Fortress 2 ‘Meet the Class’ videos, but it’s ‘Meet the Committee’ instead! If you didn’t see this video at the LAN do watch it now! It went down very well and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it!
As you’ve hopefully been informed by some other means, the first LAN of the year is rapidly nearing. Sign yourself up for lifts etc. The LAN is in AR2 of the union, and will start at 12 midday - a break from the usual 9AM start due to Freshers’ Ball clearup. We also have the traditional pre-LAN social the night before, held in the Lansdown pub, in Clifton. (We hope the name isn’t an omen…) If you don’t know where it is, keep going towards Clifton past the union, and turn left after the “10 o’ clock shop.” After that if you don’t see the massive dock-off sign, well, you’ve probably gone wrong somewhere or have your eyes closed.
Well, we’re here at Fresh and connected to the interwebs thanks to the untiring, unrelenting and frankly ninja efforts of Dan Foster, the Union IT support chap, aided and abetted by our Webmaster, WildFire. Network cable was laid for approximately half a mile throughout the union purely to get us online!
We’re brilliantly busy and have already seen lots of old and lots of new faces. Unreal Tournament 2004 versus Esvandiary has been embarrassing for me personally but I’m blaming the hardware or something like that. Brawl has also been enjoyed by many people either spectating or playing.
We look forward to seeing you all on IRC (link on the right) and across some battlefield or other soon!
A new university year has begun, and tomorrow we shall set up our stall at FRESH and meet lots of lovely new people.
We have four LANs arranged for the first term, and things should start off with a bang. COGS have been far from idle over the summer holidays, and we have something very exciting in store for all our new and old members alike. Can’t. Wait.
If, like us, you fall under the purview of someone who plays Team Fortress 2 “quite a lot”, you should really come into IRC and join in with the fun.
COGS are extremely active on the TF2 scene. Our teamspeak server seems to allow us to become some sort of well oiled machine - a machine which is quite good at TF2. Our skill as a team seemed to emerge out of nowhere, but however it happened, COGS are a very formidable force, and we have emerged victorious from most of the clan matches we’ve entered into. You must join us!
Of course, we do play other games. There are so many other great games out there, besides TF2. O wait, a new round just started…
Following the success of LeachLAN1, the guys at swlans are already planning LeachLAN2. Unfortunately, though, it’s some way off yet - half a year or so - still, COGS are looking forward to it and excitement is already brewing.
The venue is the same (Northleach), but this time it’s over a bank holiday weekend and there is extra gaming to be had! Last time COGS had the largest clan presence at LeachLAN by a long way - we hope we can bring even larger numbers for LL2! As before, COGS have been offered a discount for its members, which is nice.
LeachLAN 1 was a weekend-long LAN gaming event hosted by SouthWest LANs. COGS were in strong attendance, with the biggest “clan” presence there. We also proved to be the most resilient batch when it came to sleeping, with almost every one of us sleeping for no more than a couple of hours (if that) across the weekend.
Esvandiary and WildFire won the UT2004 2v2 Instagib CTF tournament for COGS. The final was an epic struggle of 3 matches (one of which was Face Classic - stalemate anyone?). Every single match was a struggle right until the last second. With less than a minute to go in the final match, COGS were leading 3 captures to 2, and both red and blue flags taken. COGS battled until the last second to retain their lead and emerged victorious. Well done to them!
Wyrm, our ex-president, entered and won the competition to win a Razer mouse. We believe that winning the mouse was actually a secondary goal for Wyrm, with his primary objective being to walk around in his Speedo’s frightening everybody. If you want to see Wyrm in action [you probably don't], click here.
The venue was in Northleach, Gloucestershire. Whilst not a million miles away from Bristol, it was still a complex undertaking arranging for everyone and their PCs to be transported so many miles. We are all looking forward to the next event. There are currently plans to hold a “BrisLAN”, in Bristol, which will be far easier for COGS to attend. Hopefully we would see an even stronger COGS presence at the BrisLAN.
